The way to creating the real ocean with whale.

The Whale...




   I am thinking with i want to create the work about the ocean and the whale from so long ago.but i have a problem with my skill and i didn't know how to simulate the big ocean in the past.and now i got the way to make the work like that.and i really want to show the step of working to share too.
   I have started my work with to find the real picture of whale for my model.and reference for the ocean when i must to composite too.

   this is my some of reference :



   and it make me understand about every part i must to create in 3d program now.it is whale model , ocean
splash , foam and little splash for water.
- 1. step create the model just rough for painting in Zbrush.


-2.  step I start paint in Zbrush and make more detail in here. I really like to use the UV in Zbrush too.
because the position is same when i have painted here.


-3.  step I started animate the whale is jumping and down to the sea.and i export every animated object to
Realflow for simulate the ocean part.


-4. step I started to rigging the realflow scene for simulate the ocean. about the realflow you can't create full of the ocean in the scene.but you should to create it just like the small tank with inside the camera can show it.

   This is Hybrido from realflow and you can create the splash from hybrido too.the splash will create when model object pass the hybrido.and it will gone when the splash touch the hybrido too.this is very nice way to create it because so similar the real splash.and i simlulated this scene around 1 week.i know my water part still have some problem with the radius of the sea should to smaller than but my computer have the problem to generate the resolution of hybrido smaller than this.my resolution hybrido is around 10 million.


   After every simulate done first try i used the grid mesh for generate the sea surface but it too rough and the blobmesh between the air is disappear. This way is better i use the Particlemesh (RenderKit) it can create some of the blob mesh in the air too you can see it in picture.

-5.Import every mesh to maya and prepare to render the scene.


I use the oceanshader in maya this shader very nice for the color and translucence. for the shade.and lighting scene is the noon .i use just only some directional light and the spotlight too. with Imagebaselighting from environment light.


Shader for the whale i use blinn and displacement map from Zbrush.but i had try with normalmap too i didn't like it when render.i try with the old color image to bump it.and the result look very nice.


This is the first look between i am testing render.still looking cgwork much haha.but the shader of ocean look nice for some transparent.i think i can composite it in next step.But the time to render displacement model with the ocean shader took so long time.My computer use around 20 minute for 1 frame and i have around 200 frame in this scene.that mean i use around 7-8 hour for one pass of render.


And the small splash particle that i had created from realflow. You can import it by krakatoa for maya with the bin format from realflow directly.this is very nice you didn't need to created the krakatoa particle anymore.and when i testing render the look is very good i had satify with it.krakatoa maya can have lighting the particle and use the motion blur too.and render is so very fast.arond 1 minute per frame.

-6. I use Aftereffect for composite this job. In the image i show about the Refraction inside that close to the object.I have try many way to create it and then i use diplacement effect from aftereffect but the problem of this way is refraction inside the whale and outside is different so much.Then i must to seperate it to two type of refraction.



In the image i show the refraction between i composite it.And another problem is i want to create the motion blur too but i cant created it when render.i had try in maya but the time is so long.then i use the mv2dnormalize pass from mentalray this way is faster and comfortable to composite too.


This is the mv2dnormalize pass and i use RSMB motionblur vector for it.But you should use it in one pass.better than use it on adjustment layer because it blur too much.


In the final look i use the color grade in Aftereffect. and adjust the tone look some blue same with the sky too.I hope anyone see my job will like it and i have try to do in the best now. Many thank.
